Mission
Advise TX is funded by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB), the College Advising Corps and the school districts we serve.
Advise TX places recent college graduates as full-time college advisers in Title One high schools in five regions of Texas. Advise TX provides the support that students in Title One high schools require to navigate the complex processes of college admissions, matriculation and financial aid. The University of Texas at Austin chapter has 17 advisers serving Central Texas, Dallas, El Paso, Houston and the Rio Grande Valley.
Program Overview
The University of Texas at Austin AdviseTX College Advising Corps is part of the national College Advising Corps, the nation’s largest nonprofit college access program. The national College Advising Corps consists of a consortium of currently 31 partner institutions (including the University of Texas at Austin) in 15 states who have committed to recruit and train talented, enthusiastic recent college graduates to serve as college advisers in more than 820 selected high schools throughout the nation.
The program aims to increase the number of Title One students entering and completing higher education. Advisers employ a “best match/best fit” college selection model to help students plan their college searches, complete admissions and financial aid applications, and enroll at schools that will serve them well. Advisers work full-time within the program from August 1st until June 30th of each year. Since the College Advising Corps partners with the OneStar Foundation, advisers are also part of the AmeriCorps program.
After attending comprehensive training during the month of August, advisers report to their high school to work within the College and Career Center serving high school juniors and seniors. As a heavily data-driven program, our advisers are required to track the following seven Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) on their work with seniors using the College Advising Corps’ comprehensive proprietary database:
- One-On-One Meetings with Seniors
- Family Engagement
- College Application Submissions
- FAFSA Assistance
- FAFSA Submissions
- Scholarship/Institutional Aid Dollars Awarded
The University of Texas at Austin Advise TX program is the oldest CAC program in Texas. The program currently manages 17 college advisers who serve in Title One high schools within 9 school districts in Central Texas, Dallas, El Paso, Houston and the Rio Grande Valley.
