Admission Decisions

All applications receive an individualized holistic review as part of the UT Austin admissions decision review process. Learn more about the UT Austin holistic review process. Applicants are notified of their decisions through MyStatus and by mail.

Texas law offers eligible freshman applicants automatic admission to The University of Texas at Austin. Applicants eligible for automatic admission to UT Austin have their applications reviewed holistically to determine admission to specific colleges, schools and majors. Applications from students who are not eligible for automatic admission as outlined below are reviewed holistically to determine admissibility to the university and also to make decisions about admission to specific colleges, schools and majors.

Automatic Admission

Texas law offers eligible freshman applicants automatic admission to public colleges and universities. The initial legislation, passed into law in 1997, offered automatic admission to eligible students in the top 10 percent of their high school class.

In 2009, the law was modified for The University of Texas at Austin. Under the new law, the university must automatically admit enough students to fill 75 percent of available Texas resident spaces. Each fall, the university notifies Texas school officials of the class rank that current high school juniors need to attain by the end of their junior year in order to be automatically admitted.

  • Summer/Fall 2017 and Spring 2018 applicants: Top 7%
  • Summer/Fall 2018 and Spring 2019 applicants: Top 7%
  • Summer/Fall 2019 and Spring 2020 applicants: Top 6%
  • Summer/Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 applicants: Top 6%

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board establishes the rules that govern which students are eligible for automatic admission.

Even applications from students who are automatically admissible are subject to holistic review to determine the major to which the applicant will be admitted.

Transfer Applicants

Transfer applications, like freshman applications, undergo holistic review. But high school performance and SAT/ACT test scores are not considered. Instead, we look for:

  • Substantial coursework from a challenging academic institution
  • Evidence of relevant coursework and experiences related to your field of study
  • Required courses for specific areas of study
  • Evidence of a positive academic trend (GPA)

Certain transfer applicants may be eligible for automatic transfer admission.
